The Sunshine Coast sports community is being encouraged to take advantage of the Bligh Government’s free Recruiting and Retaining Volunteers workshop on Monday, 24 October.
Sport Minister Phil Reeves said sport and recreation clubs, administrators, instructors, coaches and volunteers will find the workshop worthwhile.
“The workshop, being held in partnership with Sunshine Coast Regional Council, will provide information on improving the administration of clubs or associations, and will focus on attracting, retaining and managing volunteers,” Mr Reeves said.
“This is a great learning opportunity for people involved in sport and recreation clubs at the grassroots level, and will assist the local sports industry increase and share their knowledge and contribute to the development of sport and recreation in the region.
“The forum will also feature presentations and promote sharing of ideas.”
The interactive workshop will discuss:
Modern recruitment and retention strategies;
How to increase your volunteer numbers; and
How to best utilise a limited number of volunteers.
Mr Reeves said the workshop will help the Bligh Government work towards its Toward Q2: Tomorrow’s Queensland goal of boosting the number of Queenslanders involved in their communities as volunteers by 50 per cent by 2020.
“Volunteers are the backbone of the sport and recreation industry – on sporting fields and ovals, parks and beaches, volunteers give their valuable time to ensure Queenslanders are provided with quality opportunities to get active,” Mr Reeves said.
“The Bligh Government is pleased to help communities achieve this target by organising workshops that provide people with the skills and confidence needed to become volunteers.
“We’re committed to providing more opportunities for Queenslanders to get active, which stems from our continuing support for programs, projects and facilities which helps people of all ages live healthy and active lifestyles.
“Developing sport at the grassroots right up to the elite level heightens our chances of hosting events, and reinforces our reputation as the Champions State and the Events State as well.
“We’ve made the tough economic decisions to ensure we can continue to support local sport and recreation.”
