The winner of the Noosa Regional Gallery national contemporary Sunshine Coast Art Prize (SCAP) 3D, presented by Sunshine Coast Council, was announced on Friday 24 August.
Division 12 Councillor Tony Wellington said he was honoured to present Elizabeth Shaw from Annerley in Brisbane with the coveted overall SCAP 3D winner award.
“As winner Elizabeth receives a cash prize of $15,000. She will also enjoy a four-week arts residency valued at $5000,” Cr Wellington said.
“This year we have also awarded a Highly Commended prize to local artist Johanna DeMaine from Landsborough. She receives $2500 sponsored by Friends of Noosa Regional Gallery.
“In a SCAP first, there is also a judge’s special commendation prize which was presented to Gary Christian from Jamberoo, NSW.
“SCAP is the annual signature arts event on the Sunshine Coast. It is a highly sought-after contemporary prize for both local and national emerging and established artists.”
Renowned judge Peter Pinson, OAM said SCAP 3D presents a wide and fascinating array of work, illustrating the diverse media with vastly divergent objectives to be found in contemporary three dimensional art practices.
“The exhibition has attracted many entrants with impressive career records,” Mr Pinson said.
“In my view, the overall standard of work in the SCAP 3D exhibition is high. Some individual works are very impressive indeed, combining creative vigour with considerable technical facility. The exhibition includes time-based works that engage technology in intriguing ways.
“First prize was awarded to Elizabeth Shaw’s arrangements of natural objects and abstract forms which in visual terms I found engrossing. These works have a surrealist’s sense of the absurd, a silversmith’s command of craftsmanship, and a sculptor’s feeling for imaginative form.
“I have awarded the Highly Commended prize to Johanna DeMaine who used two conventional pot-forms for her work Paradise Regained, made from translucent porcelain, and are simply but elegantly shaped.
“Due to the high standard of work exhibited, this year I have also awarded a Special Commendation to Gary Christian for his work entitled Furnace which plays two levels of patterns against each other.
“I congratulate Sunshine Coast Council for maintaining this cultural event, with its continuing high standards. “
The community can also get involved in this year’s SCAP by visiting the exhibition or council’s gallery website and voting for their favourite artist in the People’s Choice or Children’s Choice awards.
The SCAP 3D exhibition will be on display at Noosa Regional Gallery until 7 October 2012.
