Children attending the Vacation Care program at Caloundra Christian College had two weeks of stimulating activities over the school holidays. From cupcake designing and t-shirt dying to adventurous day trips to the Ginger Factory, the Art Gallery and the Queensland Museum.
“My favourite day was when we went to the Art Gallery. It was so cool and amazing,” said one of the children who attended. The Brisbane excursion was aimed at allowing the children to not only experience travelling around on public transport, but to also attend the presentation “Fly Away Home” by leading Australian artist Fiona Hall. This presentation was developed in collaboration with the Children’s Art Centre and teaches youngsters about the reasons behind the migration of birds and their quest in finding a suitable habitat in a favourable environment. It encourages the children to preserve these habitats by looking after our environment and the world around us. Much of Fiona’s creative work features shredded paper money which she uses as the core ingredient in her uniquely designed bird’s nests. The children were encouraged to open their imaginations and create their own designer birds and nests.
The Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program at Caloundra Christian College aims to provide a safe, welcoming and stimulating age appropriate environment that caters for all children’s individual interests and needs. “It was a very enlightening day in so many ways. Many of the kids had not travelled on public transport before,” Mary-Ann Shenton, OSHC Coordinator said. “So they learned valuable lessons in the importance of adhering to time-frames and having good time management skills as they travelled from Caloundra to Brisbane and around the city on public transport.”
