Cooroy residents will soon benefit from Unitywater’s major upgrade of the Cooroy Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
Work on the upgrade has commenced and the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.
The upgrade is the latest addition in a growing list of achievements aimed at future proofing the sewage systems of the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay regions.
Once complete, it will also ensure that residents of Pomona who have access to the sewerage network, can connect if they wish.
“Investing in this key project means we can construct an improved, environmentally-friendly sewage treatment plant that will deliver a long term sustainable solution for the growing Sunshine Coast population,” Unitywater Project Manager David Goodall said.
Sunshine Coast Regional Council Division 12 Councillor Lew Brennan played a pivotal role in ensuring the project could proceed.
Cr Brennan worked closely with Unitywater to ensure neighbouring community groups, the Camphor Laurel Timber Initiative and the Cooroora Wood Workers Club can continue their activities while the upgrade takes place.
“While it is essential for the greater Cooroy community for this upgrade to take place, it is also vital to make sure the neighbouring community is respected,” said Cr Brennan.
Through Cr Brennan’s involvement, these groups have now been relocated to a larger site nearby.
“It is pleasing to see an organisation such as Unitywater is willing to listen and work with Council and myself to accommodate these two community groups. Unitywater have been great partners in this project already,” he said.
Unitywater will continue to keep residents and stakeholders informed of work progress on a regular basis.
