TAFE Queensland East Coast Design students showing off their final assessment garments. Three of the pieces will be modelled at the Peregian Beach Food & Fashion Fiesta.
Two TAFE Queensland East Coast students have been selected to showcase their upcoming graduate collections at the Peregian Beach Food & Fashion Fiesta Wed 3 September.Participating final year fashion student Yasmin Bridge said she started working on design for her graduation pieces late May and is now focusing on the process of production, pattern making and developing specification sheets. Her business Awkward Chat focuses on clothes ethically sourced and made from recycled materials with one of her pieces being modelled at the Fiesta partly made from the cover of a director’s chair.“My philosophy is no matter how awkward it is, let’s initiate & encourage conversations about where our purchases come from: how are the earth and its inhabitants treated?” she said. When asked about her experience at TAFE she said “I’ve loved the sustainable focus at this TAFE – I was really pleasantly surprised and didn’t expect it.” “We’ve made a few recycled garments and a lady came and showed us weaving, so it’s been really very cool.”Fellow student Clare Faulds will also have her major assessment creations shown at the Fiesta and said she is designing clothes for middle aged women to feel comfortable in, but which are neither frumpy, nor too skimpy. The Lions Club Peregian and Peregian Beach Business Association are hosting the event at Peregian Beach Village which is expected to draw a crowd of 400 with proceeds raised going to a number of local charities and community projects including Sunshine Butterflies and Katie Rose Cottage.“It’s a wonderful way to showcase local business and talent,” Michele Lipner Lions Coordinator and Fiesta organiser said.Nicki Jutgange, spokesperson for the Peregian Beach Business Association and Director of boutique Soul Sanctuary said thirteen fashion houses from Peregian Beach will be showing this coming season’s fashions.Ten of the surrounding Peregian restaurants will also be providing a two course meal in marquees on the Village Green, and a complimentary glass of wine. The students’ Fashion teacher Amanda Knights said the two students were selected to participate in the Fiesta as they’re both very driven and have goods out there for sale.“Boutiques will see what’s on offer and it can generate local enthusiasm,” she said.“I have always thought we should be involved [in the Fiesta] so when they emailed and asked of course we said yes.”
