[Video] Sunshine Coast Local Disaster Management Coordinator Andrew Ryan has urged residents to be prepared after the Queensland Bureau of Meterology (BOM) issued a severe weather warning for the region.
There is also an increased possibility of heavy rainfall on the Sunshine Coast over the next 48 hours.
Mr Ryan said the latest update from the Queensland Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) showed a trough should move south east with rainfalls of 50-100mm expected from Mackay to St George through to the South East Coast today (Thursday, March 27).
“The Bureau had advised there is a potential for heavy rainfall which may lead to flash and overland flooding and potentially move South East over the coming days,” Mr Ryan said.
“Heavier rainfall for the South East is likely tonight (Thursday) and rainfall is still expected in the South East on Friday, with a trough likely to move east off the coast, causing instability leading to possible storms.”
Mr Ryan said residents should be wary of the possibility for flash flooding.
“As with any short, intense rain event there is always the chance of flash flooding particularly around creeks, drains and causeways,” he said.
“Residents need to remember, if it’s flooded, forget it.
“Don’t put yours and others’ lives at risk by attempting to cross flooded roads, turn back and find an alternative route.
“Parents please keep a close watch on your children to ensure they don’t play or swim in floodwaters.
“Pet owners should also ensure their animals are safe and secure in the event of a storm.”
