Police are investigating a traffic crash at Coolum Beach this afternoon (15 Feb) in which two women were seriously injured.
Initial information suggests a car was travelling westbound on Yandina-Coolum Road when, for unknown reasons, it crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with another car.
Both the driver of the first vehicle, a 44-year-old woman and the driver of the second vehicle, a 43-year-old woman were transported to Nambour General Hospital with serious injuries.
The incident occurred close to the Quanda Road roundabout at approximately 2.15pm. Police were forced to close both lanes of Yandina-Coolum Road for several hours, causing traffic chaos as parents headed to local schools to collect students.
By 3pm, traffic was reported to be backed up for five kilometres south of the Yandina-Coolum Road/Sunshine Motorway roundabout, with motorists and buses from the nearby Coolum Christian College forced to detour via the Bruce Highway. The road was reopened at approximately 6:30pm.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating and anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact police on 5471 7596 or Crime Stoppers.
