A new prostate cancer support group is being established at Beerwah to service the southern end of the Sunshine Coast and North Morton regions. This support group is being formed to support all those who can be seen by the Glass House Mountains.
An awareness evening held at Beerwah on 22 September was attended by 40 men and their partners who voted to start the group, to be known as the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group.
Organiser Mr Bob McLean, said the Group is being sponsored by the Glasshouse Country Menshed Inc. the group is also strongly supported by Beerwah Lions, the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains, and the long established Sunshine Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group.
Co-convenor of the Sunshine Coast Group, Rob Tonge, who attended the Beerwah gathering, said that with the high population growth in the southern area of the region and the north Morton region, a second support organisation was needed. The Sunshine Coast Group attracts 70 – 80 men and their partners at Group monthly meetings, with increasing enquiries from the Glasshouse, Blackall Range and north Morton area.
Bob McLean said latest figures show that 20,000 men are now diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and with the increased publicity being given to this type of cancer, there is growing demand for information and support.
An organising committee has been formed to establish and manage the Glasshouse Country Support Group and the next gathering will be held in Beerwah, Tuesday 11th October at 5.30 pm. at the Beerwah RSL Beerwah Parade, on the eastern side if the Train Station.
“Your support may be for you, your family or another Queenslander” Bob said.
