If you’ve ever been frustrated at not being able to find a recycling bin while out and about, times are about to change thanks to $30,000 grant from the Packaging Stewardship Forum.
Sunshine Coast Council successfully applied for the funding and will install 240litre recycle bin enclosures in various high profile, high density public places across the Coast.
Areas for consideration include Alexandra Heads, Mooloolaba, Shelley Beach, Kings Beach, Happy Valley, Sunshine Beach, Cotton Tree, Noosaville and Noosa Heads.
Council’s Environment Portfolio Councillor Keryn Jones said that because recycling at home is now second nature, it’s time to move onto phase two, public place recycling.
“If used correctly, one 240litre recycling enclosure has the potential to remove 16kg of recycled material per week,” Cr Jones said.
“This is a key action out of the waste minimisation strategy that will help us in our aim to divert 70% of waste from landfill.
“Currently we have 50 recycling enclosures across the Region and this grant will allow us to increase that figure by 60% by the end of the financial year.
“Sunshine Coast Council will match the grant dollar for dollar, so with each enclosure costing $2000, we will be installing 30 new recycling bins across the Coast.”
The enclosures will have the same colour yellow lid as the domestic recycling bins making it easy to distinguish between the two and the same recycling rules also apply.
