Peregian Beach artist Petalia Humphreys has been commissioned as part of the yourcity. yourstory. creative program at the MET within the new Maroochydore City Centre. Petalia’s installation includes both an 8m gallery wall and a three-dimensional sculpture in 3 sections.

“I am thrilled to have my artwork which was selected from a field of entries to be on display as part of the Maroochydore City Centre City Activation Strategy. The CBD will become an important meeting point for the local community and we are already seeing this with a number of great dining options as well as The MET precinct which has a wonderful café and community greenspace.

“My practice explores what might be considered three-dimensional paintings – reductive abstract paintings that reveal an architectural concern for geometry and location.

“I like to encourage an interactive approach, inviting the audience to engage in playful ways, considering ways of looking at, perceiving and viewing the work,” Petalia said.

Petalia installation was completed last week and is titled ‘Occupation – Observances in Counterpart’ which she describes as hard edge, colourful and geometric.

The three-dimensional sculptural work creates a playful, interactive space where a viewer can activate the sculptures by moving through and around, becoming part of the response to the architectonic space.

SunCentral Project Manager City Activation Bronwyn Adams said the yourcity. yourstory. creative program uses arts-based programming to enable people’s ideas, experiences and responses to their future city to be expressed, documented and showcased.

“yourcity. yourstory. represents a valuing of the community who contribute to bringing Maroochydore City Centre to life, including the designers, builders and community development practitioners, artists, entrepreneurs, businesses and communities.

“Petalia’s work was selected as part of an EOI process we undertook during July-August this year as a way of showcasing the work of local artists while activating the new Maroochydore CBD.

“Petalia produces hard edge, colourful geometric painting and sculpture and this is the first time her work has been shown in digital form so it’s a great opportunity to showcase her work to a public audience which has been installed by Mavericks Print and Design,” Bronwyn said.

Petalia’s works will be on display until early 2022.
