Mayor Mark Jamieson has welcomed council’s unanimous decision to approve the development application for the $350 million expansion of Sunshine Plaza – saying it’s a vote of confidence in the region’s retail future.
“This investment will create confidence, jobs and a high class retail experience for residents and visitors,” Mr Jamieson said.
“This region is undergoing a remarkable transformation with work underway on the region’s biggest infrastructure project – the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, planning well progressed for the new Maroochydore CBD and the airport expansion at the EIS stage.
“This addition of 37,000 square metres to Sunshine Plaza will be an important part of that picture.”
The Cornmeal Creek embankment will be developed in three levels down to the creek. A café/restaurant terrace, including dining courtyards, shops, outdoor seating and a playground will be on the upper level, the mayor said.
“An additional 1,500 car parks will be provided, resulting in a total of 5035 bays for the entire Centre,” he said.
“Temporary parking is proposed on Lot 38 (west of Southern Drive/Officeworks) while the existing north-east and north-west car parks are being re-developed.”
