On Monday 17 October I presented to Bruce and Denise Morcombe, a Daniel Morcombe Foundation tie signed by Opposition leader Tony Abbott. The tie will be available for the memorabilia auction at the annual Dance for Daniel Ball, next year. The Australian Federal Parliament will recognise the Day for Daniel on 3 November as Parliament is not sitting on 28 October.
Saluting their Service grants programme I was pleased to see Caloundra RSL sub-branch received approval for a grant under this programme to help restore a former military helicopter used in the Battle of Long Tan. Once restored the helicopter will be displayed at the Caloundra RSL Sub-branch. The Saluting their Service grants programme is designed to preserve wartime heritage and involve people throughout the nation in a wide range of activities and projects.
From 28 to 30 October, Perth will host CHOGM, many of you may remember when the Sunshine Coast paid host to CHOGM in 2002. This provides members of the Commonwealth with opportunities to pursue trade and investment opportunities whilst reinforcing our strong links and shared values.
Whilst CHOGM is in full swing there are also parallel events happening such as business, people and youth forums , sporting events and the Commonwealth Festival.
Whilst here for CHOGM Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh will be also be visiting various states from 19 to 29 October including a visit to Queensland on 24 October. I would encourage everyone to give them a wonderful, warm Queensland reception.
Carers Week 2011 will be held between Sunday 16 October and Saturday 22 October.
Carers come in all ages and from all walks of life – anyone can become a carer at anytime. Carers are often family members who dedicate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide care, support and love to family and friends.
Carers Week is our opportunity to acknowledge their enormous contribution to our community. Further information on Carers Week 2011 can be found at www.carersaustralia.com.au/carersweek
Don’t forget those wishing to sign my petition calling for the widening of the Bruce Highway between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast to six lanes can sign it at my electorate office at Buddina or at the office of State Member Andrew Powell at Maleny.
