Nominations are being called by the Sunshine Coast Council for outstanding locals to be recognised at the fourth annual Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards.

Mayor Bob Abbot launched the 2012 awards at the newly opened Maroochy Arts and Ecology Centre at the Maroochy Botanic Gardens on Thursday 1 September.

“The Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards recognise and honour the achievements of citizens from our own backyard who have made an outstanding contribution to the region,” Councillor Abbot said.

“There are many individuals in our community who work to make the coast a better place and they deserve our thanks.
“These people are our local heroes and it’s important that we celebrate their contribution to our region.”

Last year’s Outstanding Achievement Award Winner, Jessica Watson said she was very honoured to be recognised in her local community.

“The recognition is very humbling and the hometown award last year meant a lot to me,” Jessica said.
The awards will be presented in the following categories:

  • Business
  • Community
  • Creative
  • Environment
  • Sport and Recreation
  • Senior Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year

Nominations are open from 1 September to 30 December and can be completed online.  Entry kits can be downloaded from council’s website or picked up from customer service centres, libraries, visitor information centres, Sunshine Coast University and TAFE.

The fourth annual Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards will take place on 25 January 2012 at Maroochy Baptist Centre in North Buderim.
