Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson officially opened the Girraween Sports Complex today, giving the Sunshine Coast community another opportunity to get active.
Mr Dickson said the $6.9 million multi-sport facility in Noosa was a vital piece of sporting and community infrastructure.
“The Newman Government is determined to get more Queenslanders involved in sport and recreation wherever they live and this impressive new complex will provide a wide range of sports for the entire community,” Mr Dickson said.
“Along with activities including soccer, little athletics and cycling, the Girraween Sports Complex will bring with it opportunities to host community events like carnivals, fairs and fetes.
“The facility includes a grassed athletics track, two senior and two junior soccer fields, a cycling criterium track, a clubhouse, spectator mounds, field irrigation, vehicle access, field lighting and associated parking and amenities.”
Mr Dickson said the Newman Government had contributed $1.5 million towards the project.
“Our government is very pleased to support important projects like this, working with the local community to get much-needed sporting infrastructure in place,” he said.
“That’s why we are assisting sport and recreation clubs and families at the grassroots community level through our $18 million Get in the Game initiative.
“Through three new funding programs, we’re providing clubs with better services, facilities and funding to assist children who can least afford or may otherwise benefit from joining a sporting club.
“Sport and recreation not only promotes and enables a healthier lifestyle, but are an important means of uniting and strengthening local communities.”
