Queenslanders are being urged to support the Queensland Government’s commitment to small businesses across the state by shopping locally to help bolster sales and support local jobs.
Premier Campbell Newman and Small Business Minister Jann Stuckey today launched a ‘buy locally’ campaign which will be supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) and local Members of Parliament across the state.
Sunshine Coast MP’s have echoed the Premier’s call by requesting Coast residents to get behind this campaign and show their support for our Sunshine communities.
Mr Newman said his Government was unashamedly pro-small business and was committed to growing a strong and prosperous small business sector.
“In the first year of this Government we have introduced many initiatives to help small businesses,” Mr Newman said.
“Now, we are asking members of communities across the state to do what they can to help local businesses by shopping locally where possible.
“Many Government MPs have a background in small business and we understand the importance of shopping locally to support business and industry.
“Small business is the backbone of Queensland’s four pillar economy, underpinning the vital sectors of tourism, agriculture, mining and construction.”
Minister for Small Business Jann Stuckey said when people shopped locally, their money stayed locally.
“In turn, small businesses supports the community through a multiplier effect, with one dollar spent at a local business returning five times that amount through employee wages, rates and the purchase of materials and supplies,” Ms Stuckey said.
“The benefits of supporting local businesses and shopping locally cannot be underestimated.
“This campaign is about strengthening and supporting local communities.
“I’m pleased we are partnering with the CCIQ because they have a close relationship with and support the interests of businesses throughout the state.”
Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland CEO Stephen Tait said CCIQ was delighted to partner with the State Government and encouraged Queenslanders to support their business community by sourcing products and services locally.
“Small businesses are the lifeblood of our State, making an unrivalled contribution to our economy and employment,” Mr Tait said.
“They also contribute to the vibrancy and resilience of our local communities.
“Queenslanders, due to their proud nature, have a desire to buy locally, and rightfully so, as our small businesses offer considerable variety, excellent quality, and price competitiveness.”
There are almost 412,000 small businesses in Queensland, accounting for 96 percent of all businesses in the state.
