A Sunshine Coast hinterland lookout and creek have been formally named in honour of two pioneering families.
Glass House MP Andrew Powell said Pages Creek and McCarthy Lookout had been officially added to the Department of Natural Resources and Mines place name database following public consultation.
“Although both names have been known locally for many years, they have never been officially recorded on DNRM’s Place Name Database,” Mr Powell said.
“McCarthy Lookout is named after Joseph McCarthy whose family, from 1883 until 1954, owned the property on which the lookout is located.
“The lookout is located on Mountain View Road, about two kilometers south of Maleny.”
Mr Powell said Pages Creek originated from Charles Edward Page and Edwin Page who, in the 1920s, purchased the land through which the creek flows.
“Pages Creek is signposted at the point it crosses River Road, about five kilometers west of the Peachester township,” he said.
“Some of the descendants of the Page family still reside in the Peachester district.
“Responses supporting the naming proposal were received from a range of community groups during the public consultation process.”
DNRM administers the Place Names Act 1994 which provides processes for naming areas and geographical features.
