Mayor welcomes Oceanside Kawana development

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has welcomed another milestone at one of the region’s biggest developments.
The Mayor said the naming of the central Kawana region as Oceanside Kawana by developer Stockland is another step forward for the project.
“This project will generate tens of thousands of jobs and consolidate the health and construction industries – helping to make our economy sustainable,” he said.
“Work on the private hospital is well underway and I look forward to the first sod being turned on the public hospital site.
“These sorts of developments create confidence in the future of our region and help potential investors to commit to the Sunshine Coast.”
Council’s also been playing its part to encourage local business and investment, including:

• Scrapping pre-lodgement fees for discussions on possible development applications
• Reducing application fees by 5% for all Commercial, Business and Industrial land uses
• Reducing application fees for 7 selected land use types by 25% by means of a fee rebate when the use commences within 2 years
• Boosting funding for economic development initiatives
• A capital works program of $146 million of which a substantial part will available for local businesses to tender for
• Hosting a Business Leaders Round Table
• Hosting information sessions to help local businesses to tender for work on the Sunshine Coast University Hospital

 
OCEANSIDE KAWANA FACT SHEET

• The creation of Kawana dates back to 1960 when the first developer, Alfred Grant, released blocks of land at Buddina Beach and Point Cartwright priced from £975

• The original development area encompassed some 1,600 hectares of land featuring around 8.2 kilometres of ocean frontage from Point Cartwright to Wurtulla

• Alfred Grant named the area Kawana after an aboriginal name for wild flowers, which were a predominant feature of the region

• The Kawana population was still less than 100 people by the mid-1960s but had passed 20,000 by 2006 and is forecast to reach about 40,000 by 2015

• As development gained momentum, new services and land uses were required. The Nicklin Way opened in 1967 and was later followed by the creation of canals, lakes and commercial sites

• While known locally as Kawana Waters, the Kawana urban area consists of seven individual suburbs with no specific postcode for Kawana

• In recent years, Stockland has taken on the role of master developer for Kawana, creating several new communities including Birtinya, Kawana Island, Lake Kawana, Kawana Forest and the Island Point Villas

• The region is also home to the Kawana Business Village, the Stockland Park sport and leisure facility, Stockland Stadium, Bokarina Beach and the emerging Eastbank at Lake Kawana area

• The nearby Brightwater community off Kawana Way at Mountain Creek is the largest masterplanned project currently underway on the coast. Brightwater is undergoing its own substantial growth phase and is now approximately 50 per cent sold

• Work is well under way on the Ramsay Health Care private hospital and the Queensland Government recently named the Exemplar Health consortium as the successful tenderer for the $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH)

• Stockland is now planning the remaining elements of the central Kawana masterplan, and has introduced the new name of Oceanside Kawana to reflect all the components of this exciting region

• Consultations are been held with key community, government and business stakeholders, together with residents of Birtinya and surrounding areas, while the first Oceanside Kawana signage is currently being erected
