Luke Bartlett, the new Chair of local liquor accord CALM (Collaborative Approach to Liquor Management), has a vision for Caloundra’s bars and clubs to work hand-in-hand with the Chamber of Commerce.
CALM, initiated six years ago, is a voluntary partnership of liquor licensees, which aims to find practical solutions to alcohol-related issues. This partnership also involves liaising with State and Local Governments agencies to discuss regional liquor-related issues.
Mr Bartlett, the proprietor of tapas bar Forty Five 51, said he believed members of CALM Caloundra and the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce could work closely together to ensure that licensees were able to participate and benefit from involvement and collaboration, with the broader business community.
“CALM Caloundra has made great progress in its goal to improve liquor management strategies for Caloundra venues since its establishment in 2008,” he said.
“In 2014, the group looks to build on its good work to ensure that Caloundra’s venues are safe and enjoyable and licensees remain active corporate citizens.”
Mr Bartlett said he and CALM Deputy Chair Steve Fromont from Caloundra RSL Club were looking forward to working with the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce.
Caloundra Chamber of Commerce spokesman Bill Darby said Caloundra was a major tourism and hospitality centre providing for local residents, as well as visitors from across Australia and overseas.
Mr Darby manages Rumba Beach Resort and also sits on the Attorney General’s review panel currently overhauling the State’s liquor and gaming legislation.
“Our Chamber is keen to work with CALM Caloundra, committing to strategies and collaborative initiatives to improve the vibrancy of hospitality offered in Caloundra. We still have a long way to go if really want to see the Caloundra CBD humming at night”
Steve Fromont was elected unopposed as Deputy Chair at the last CALM Caloundra meeting. He has held committee positions with the organisation since its inception six years ago.
“I wish Luke well for the year ahead in his role as Chairperson,” Steve said.
Caloundra liquor licensees are invited to the next CALM Caloundra meeting will be held on Thursday 20 March at Kings Beach Tavern.
