Two students from Caloundra Christian College love the Japanese language – even more now that they’ve both won awards for speaking it! At last weekend’s Sunshine Coast Languages Speech Contest, held at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Year 11 student Conor Fogarty and Year 9 student Chloe Pascoe won first place and third place respectively in their divisions.
They were required to present a guided speech, followed by questions from the judging panel. “The parents are extremely proud of their kids,” said Mrs Hiroko Morohashi, the College Japanese teacher. “I am very happy with their results too, but I also love the fact that all students work hard, independently and enthusiastically, even though it is quite challenging for them and they need to spend so much time of their spare time memorizing their speech and preparing for questions,” she added.
The College has been inundated with International students recently, which has made it easier for these budding bi-linguals to practice their conversational skills in Japanese. Doing so well at last weekend’s contest will also stand the CCC students in good stead for those who are planning on participating in the College Japanese 10 day tour, which departs in just two weeks.
