Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson will officially open Social Inclusion Week celebrations at 10am on Thursday 29 November 2012 at Felicity Park Caloundra.
Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said the Social Inclusion Week celebrations will see Felicity Park come alive from 10am to 8pm with over 90 local community groups showcasing the support services available on the Coast.
“Social Inclusion Week aims to connect local communities, workmates, family and friends to build and strengthen relationships and networks. It also provides an opportunity for education to improve awareness on social inclusion issues,” she said.
“There are two expos being held as part of the day-long celebrations.
“The Community Connections Expo will kick off the action-packed activities from 10am to 3pm and is a great opportunity to discover the wide range of services on offer for people with disabilities, seniors, families with children and carers.
“Activities at the expo include traditional Indigenous games and storytelling, cubbyhouse building and you can even learn how to cook tasty, healthy and affordable meals and much more.
“We will also have representatives from community groups such as Family Relationships Centre, Carer’s Queensland, Red Cross Australia, Meals on Wheels, Men’s Shed, Carebus among others.
“Then from 3pm to 8pm the focus will shift to young people and their families with the Connect 4 Expo who will be entertained with live music, dance, zombie face painting, steam punk recycled art and jewellery, Wii games on the large cinema outdoor screen, hair and make-up demonstrations.
“Leading experts will provide tips on parenting and getting through the teenage years. Learn how to understand the mind of a teen, deal with bullying, make choices about career, study and entrepreneurial options.
“There will be displays featuring a wide range of support services from sports groups, education and training providers, business and industry and community groups from around the Coast.
“This is a day not to be missed so I encourage the community to head to Felicity Park on 29 November and help the Sunshine Coast collaborate, connect and celebrate Social Inclusion Week 2012.”
