Big Air Community Broadband has been selected by Sunshine Coast Council to provide enhanced, free WiFi broadband in 24 locations for a one-year trial beginning mid-December.
And in a separate announcement, Sunshine Coast Airport has just begun a free WiFi service across its terminals.
“Passengers are now free to browse the web at leisure, check arrival/departure times, receive specials from terminal retailers, access social networks and contact their loved ones online – all at no charge,” airport General Manager Peter Pallot said.
All users with WiFi-enabling technology in the airport terminal vicinity can simply select the free service on offer, connect and browse within seconds on a variety of mobile devices – including smart phones, iPhones, iPads, tablets and laptops.
The locations included in the Big Air Community Broadband trial are:
“Some of the locations already have either free or paid WiFi facilities however potential faster connection speed and coverage will improve as a result,” Economic Development (digital) portfolio councillor, Stephen Robinson, said.
“Big Air currently delivers an advertising WiFi service for clients in more than 150 locations in Australia.
“The council and Big Air WiFi partnership has been designed to provide an alternative source of broadband for users in locations across the Sunshine Coast during the trial.
“As with council trials in other locations, council will invite businesses with WiFi to register their location and WiFi offering to be included in a broader promotion of WiFi connection options for the Sunshine Coast.”
Businesses will also be encouraged to provide feedback during the independent evaluation process, Cr Robinson said.
“If the trial period goes well, more coverage will come online.”
