Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with TransLink, will be providing free travel on all public bus services across the coast from Monday 26 December 2011 to Sunday 8 January 2012.
The Free Holiday Buses program, funded by council’s Public Transport Levy, aims to reduce congestion and alleviate parking pressures at popular holiday spots during the festive season.
An initiative of council’s Sustainable Transport Strategy, Free Holiday Buses continue to grow in popularity with more than 200,000 passengers taking advantage of the service during the 15 day period last year.
Integrated Transport Systems Portfolio, Councillor Vivien Griffin, said the aim of the program is to increase patronage on public transport services and reduce traffic congestion across the Coast.
“This is an innovative way to help ensure our locals and visitors have a relaxed and hassle-free option for getting around during this busy period,” Cr Griffin said.
“All services are free — you don’t need to do anything special, just use the service as per usual and keep your money in your pocket.
“This is a great opportunity to try out public transport, if you haven’t done so already, and see just how convenient it can be.”
