Community members involved in sport and recreation are invited to attend a workshop hosted by the Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government. The workshop is for anyone involved in the sport and recreation industry, with a particular focus on people involved in community sports clubs and groups.
The aim of the workshop is to increase the skills and knowledge of coaches, instructors, officials, committee members, administrators and volunteers involved in community sport and recreation and will focus on working with volunteers, including mmodern recruitment and retention strategies, how to increase volunteer numbers and how to best utilise the skills volunteers bring to sporting groups.
Council is helping to build better, stronger, more sustainable sports and recreation clubs by encouraging sport and recreation development throughout the Sunshine Coast. Robyn has just taken up the full-time position of Queensland Project Officer for the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation and will work alongside Mel Schouten to support the now 42 Queensland State Schools who have or are about to implement the kitchen garden program into their schools.
Also very exciting is that Chevallum School has been made a Demonstration School for the foundation and as such they will welcome a greater number of visitors to see the work that has been done so far. This is a great recognition for tremendous work done by their volunteers who come each Tuesday to not only work with the children but also keep on top of what is a great amount of work in and around the gardens.
I would like to thank Robyn for all her commitment as the garden teacher for the past few years which I believe has been a valuable learning experience. Kitchen classes will continue as usual under Tania’s expert guidance.

I wish to congratulation the organizers and community on a wonderful day in Mooloolah on Sunday the 16th October. Council gave away hundreds of tube stock native plants which complimented the Mooloolah Valley’s own Landcare Group.
The stage performers; and in particular the students from Eudlo, Mooloolah and Glen View State Schools were amazing. A fantastic time was had by all, with a record amount of stall sites and displays… this is truly a worthwhile date claimed for the family calendar
I would personally like to thank Council Officers Sheryl and Mark for the supply and handling of the native plants, your assistance is always greatly appreciated.
Main Street, Montville – Montville Chamber of Commerce approached me with a request to install ‘Staff Parking’ signage behind the shops of Montville in the Russell Family Park. I am pleased to advise that Council has made arrangements to install these signs as soon as resources and weather permits.
Damage to streetscape in front of the Montville State School has been reported to Council. This is a result of recent works carried out by Q-Build on the adjacent Montville School property. Q-Build has been advised of the significance of this type of art work and will be repairing it within the coming weeks.
War against the giant rat tail grass in the Hinterland – Recently, I visited several properties in the Conondale and Obi Obi areas where the spread and growth of the giant rat tail grass is impacting on rural viability. Giant rat tail grass is a declared weed and property owners need to have a management plan to eradicate and protect their properties against the infestation of this weed. Council has been forced to take action against several property owners in the region but I would rather we could have a proactive approach rather than a reactive. A partnership with local government neighbours working together rather than Council being required under the Act to issue fines and possibly prosecutions.
I am absolutely honoured to be the Face of Relay for the 2011 Maleny & Hinterland Relay for Life. I see my role as an opportunity to encourage all survivors and carers to share their journey with others and support and promote fundraising activities to fight back against cancer and create a cancer-free future.
I strongly support Council retaining its Local Laws to protect vegetation on the Sunshine Coast. This follows State Government advice that local law coverage is the best method to protect vegetation while the Government decides how planning schemes can be better designed to give protection against illegal clearing. Under State Government legislation, all local laws were to end on 31 December 2011 including Council’s Local Laws to protect vegetation. It is likely that long term protection will come from a combination of local laws and planning schemes across the State, but this will only be done with consultation with our local community. Visit Council’s website to read more about vegetation protection.
Sunshine Coast Council recently ran a free workshop to enable stakeholders in rural business to hear about how the Federal Clean Energy future plan will or may affect their businesses here on the Coast. Unfortunately, this workshop was not well attended and I have approached Council on behalf of landholders seeking an opportunity for another workshop for rural businesses to attend. I attended this workshop and found it very informative and would encourage people engaged in rural activities to become aware of constraints and opportunities that may arise through the Federal Government’s Carbon Tax initiative.
Update on Council’s actions after issues had been raised by local residents. The issue of speeding has been forwarded to the Landsborough Police and they have monitored and will continue to monitor offenders. Council provided the local police with the speed status by hour report after Council had the speed counters in Annie Street. The police have assured us they will act on that data. Other issues raised were about kerbing and channelling and this has been placed on the Future Capital Works register.
Council has recently adopted the Draft Access and Inclusion Plan which aims to create a more accessible and inclusive community on the Sunshine Coast. The policy is to guide the thinking’s through all Council’s departments from planning to construction on the ground to ensure that we cater for equitable access for all including parents with prams and small children, the ageing population, young people, and people with disabilities and mobility issues. Council is seeking your feedback by 1 November 2011 – check Council’s website for more details. An estimated 56,000 people on the Sunshine Coast are living with a disability and this does not take into account visitors to our region. One of Council’s reserves, the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, has already received recognition for the work that the volunteers and Council have done over many years to ensure equitable access to the Reserve. This policy is not designed to be an expensive implementation, but a change to the way we think.
Petition for continuation of Walking Path from Glen Eden Drive to Nimbus Court, Flaxton- I tabled a petition in excess of 400 signatories highlighting the desire of the local residents to have the current footpath extended. The good news is that I have budgeted for the works to continue this financial year, estimating the footpath to continue in the first stages to the vicinity of the Blackall Range Care Cottage.
Council is in receipt of a request from the Moreton Bay Regional Council seeking a regional boundary re-alignment removing the current portion of Postman’s Track road responsibility from the Moreton Bay Council to the Sunshine Coast Council. Sunshine Coast Regional Council resolved to advise the Moreton Bay Regional Council the following:
(i) Council’s support to seek a loc al government change to the Council boundary which would result in Lot 5 on SP242747 being within the SC Regional Council;
(ii) that the proposal by Moreton Bay Regional Council for a further boundary amendment to include the section on Postmans Track fronting Lot 5 on SP242747 into the SC Regional Council is not supported and that Council’s position is that a further boundary amendment be made to include this area of road (which includes two new areas of road) within the Moreton Bay Regional council; and
(iii) authorise the CEO to apply to the Minister for Local Government and the Change Commission to seek an assessment under the Local Government Act 2009 on the boundary anomaly, in accordance with recommendation (b) (i), and recommend that the area of new road remain and respectively be included in the Moreton Bay Regional Council.
