Sunshine Coast Council has been recognised for its dedication to sustainability, winning the inaugural Local Government category at last night’s Banksia Sustainability Awards in Melbourne.
From a national field of four finalists, council won the Local Government category, which recognises leadership by fully integrating sustainability principles and practices into operational activities, and reducing the organisation’s footprint.
Mayor Mark Jamieson congratulated the organisation on its commitment to turning a vision for a sustainable region into a reality.
“This Banksia Award recognises the hard work council staff have put into driving sustainability forward both within the organisation and across the region,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“Over the past few years we have made day-to-day operational changes, such as minimising our waste, halving our stationery budget and reducing fuel consumption by over 1.1 million litres. Seven of our businesses have received ecoBiz accreditation and at the more strategic long-term level we have a plan to become carbon neutral by 2020 which includes actions such as establishing the Valdora Solar Farm.
“But this award is not just about the past because we as a council, are committed to seek innovative ways to make long-term savings and efficiencies across the organisation for the benefit of our environment, our community and the economy.
“From council’s perspective developing sustainable business practices is smart business.
“This award also recognises our strong partnerships with local residents, businesses, the Cleantech industries and the education sector all of whom are an integral part of achieving our regional vision.
“From the Sunshine Coast Economic Development Strategy to the many bushland rehabilitation programs run up and down the Coast, working together is vital to achieving environmental, economic and social sustainability for future generations.”
The Banksia Sustainability Awards recognise Australia’s innovative examples of sustainable research, practices and services, enabling organisations to see the benefits and positive outcomes in adopting a sustainable path to ensure a healthy environment for our future generations.
