Caloundra Central Park Sport and Recreation Precinct Master Plan

Sunshine Coast Council endorsed the Caloundra Central Park Sport and Recreation Precinct Master Plan at today’s Ordinary Meeting.
The plan identifies what the popular Caloundra sporting and recreation precinct will look like and how it will function into the future.
Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the purpose of the master plan was to maximise the functionality of the sporting hub for the community over the next 15 years.
“Council has extensively reviewed how users of the facility and the broader community utilise and view the complex and its associated activities” Cr Dwyer said.
“The plan aims to match future development initiatives with the aspirations of existing and future potential user groups.”
The plan acknowledges the significant population growth in the area and the increased demand for quality sport and recreation facilities.
Key features of the plan include:

• a regional tennis centre with the capacity to attract and host international events such as the ATP Challenger in 2012
• a regional mallet sports facility with the capacity to host and attract high standard events
• greater capacity for rugby league, rugby union and cricket to cater for demand increases, regional and state events
• a regional headquarters for community sport for people with a disability
• a high quality green space for the community to utilise and celebrate, and
• better connections between the separate areas within the Precinct and also between the wider community and the Precinct itself.

The plan also considers the emerging demands of gymnastics and growing trends towards participation in active lifestyle related activities, while also aiming to create improved conditions for indoor sports hall users into the future.
“This is a wonderful example of sport and recreation master planning and is a testament to the foresight of the site’s user groups and input from the local community through the master planning consultation phases,” Cr Dwyer said.
“There is huge potential for economic benefits to be realised for clubs associated with the facility and the whole community.
“We could readily put our hands up as a venue for pre-Commonwealth Games training and events.”
