“Local community organisations on the Sunshine Coast are among 4,800 across Australia to receive grants under the Volunteer Grants initiative,” the Federal Member for Fairfax, the Hon Alex Somlyay MP said today.
“Across my electorate of Fairfax, 35 organisations will share in $124,331.05 to support the work of their volunteers.
“Volunteer groups from Buderim, Coolum, Mudjimba, Maroochydore, Kenilworth, Nambour, Palmwoods and Belli Park have all been beneficiaries of the grants.
“We know that volunteers give their time, energy and expertise to support our community,” Mr Somlyay said.
“Funding assists with the purchase of much needed small equipment items and contributes to the reimbursement of training courses, background checks, fuel costgs and transport costs for volunteers with disabilities..
“The grants will also help cover transport costs of volunteers with disability who are unable to drive and need to use public transport or taxis as part of their volunteering role.
“Volunteers make a significant social and economic contribution to Australian society, contributing approximately $14.6 Billion to the not-for-profit sector each year.
“I am delighted that the hard work of our local volunteers has been recognised and I congratulate those organisations who have successfully obtained a grant,” Mr Somlyay concluded.
